Exploring Thornhill

Thornhill is a small town in the Kouga region of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. It is located approximately halfway between Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) and Jeffrey’s Bay, and is home to many who work in either town or on nearby farms.

Situated among the hills of the Gamtoos River Valley, Thornhill has water supply from the river and groundwater. Fertile floodplains and low lying land characterises Thornhill and its surrounding Kouga towns as a productive agricultural region. Apart from its rich vegetation, the area also has an abundance of bird and wildlife.

The Kouga region has a subtropical climate with a rainfall of approximately 400 mm per year in the Gamtoos Valley. It is a windy area, yet its temperate climate makes the area suitable to many different outdoor activities and a variety of agricultural production.Visitors can explore a large Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary which is dedicated to promoting the care of injured, and abandoned animals, including a range of bird species.

The sanctuary is set within beautiful grounds nestled between rolling hills, close to the ocean and is a relaxing place to spend a lazy day. Their spacious enclosures and open grounds provide visitors with a feeling of peace and tranquility. We have several braai areas located around the park and welcome you to bring your own picnic. Kouga is home to the largest aviary in the Eastern Cape!

A lovely farmer’s market, located at the Crossways Farm Village, is set out under lovely Blue Gum Trees on the 1st Sunday of each month. They have Craft stalls, Fresh Farm produce, Homemade delights and much much more!!! Do stop there and drink in the country side. You can also indulge in delicious food at a Country Kitchen Restaurant which comes highly recommended.

A Bike Park is located in the are that boasts a number of trails; catering to the needs and abilities of riders of all levels. In fact, some of the trails are perfect for hiking or walking too, not necessitating visitors to climb on a bicycle. The trails offer spectacular views, whether they are being enjoyed on the bicycle or on foot.

An Equestrian Farm is located within the idyllic surrounds and is dedicated to all things equestrian. This farm offers lessons to adults and children, using schooled and responsive horses (and ponies) to ensure the best results. This gives visitors the opportunity to interact with the horses, understand them, and enjoy the results of their training.
